Side characters occasionally comment on what's currently happening, but this isn't often, and side characters tend to run out of things to say after the 1st few floors since they were recruited to your party. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of plot twists, if any.Īs is typical of rpg games, Sakura Dungeon is very dialogue heavy. Without spoiling much, it's revealed that, in Yomi's absence, a massive power source has been moved to the bottom of the dungeon, and it's up to Yomi, Ceri, and the numerous characters that help them on their adventure, to save the world. However, thanks to the unwitting actions of an unwitting adventuring knight named Ceri, whom you capture and bind to your service after she tries in vain to slay you, you are freed from your imprisonment, and are determined to reclaim your dungeon from its new dungeon lord, whom, according to dialogue from the many monster girls that you encounter, fight, and/or capture, has been treating the dungeon's inhabitants far more poorly than Yomi has. In Sakura Dungeon, you play as Yomi, an ancient fox spirit that was once the ruler of the dungeon that you're trying to reclaim, but was sealed away for an unknown purpose. Little did I realize is that the game was so moddable that you could, say, flesh out the battle system to really make it shine, which was what I did when I made my Abyssal Makeover mod, or add more dialogue to characters like in my Additional Dialogue mod.Īs far as stories are concerned, I've seen far more interesting and engaging stories. Although I was never interested in visual novel games in general, I eventually decided to purchase Sakura Dungeon for myself. From my 1st impressions of the game from other YouTube LPers, I found that the battle system of Sakura Dungeon (and its spiritual predecessor, Demon Master Chris), despite how shallow it was, was innovative, and a more tactical alternative to the kinds of rpg battle systems that you'd find in games like Final Fantasy or Pokemon. When I 1st heard of Sakura Dungeon from one of the people that I subscribed to on YouTube (specifically GullOfDoom, my interest was piqued, so I checked out other YouTubers' playthroughs of the game (including LudaAaGames, TheLPBandit, Lost Pause, TheTwitGamer, and Negark to name a few). In fact, I'd actually recommend this game (It's one of my favorites), but ONLY with some mods installed to really make it shine. Reviewer's Foreword: Despite my negative recommendation, this review is actually meant to be mixed. In addition to dungeon exploring, Sakura Dungeon is also packed with extensive dialogue and plenty of gorgeous backdrops and cutscene artwork for the player to unlock as they carefully navigate their way through the dungeon. One of the most important mechanics of Sakura Dungeon is the ‘capture’ mechanic, wherein the player will be able to capture monster girls they encounter and add them to their party. She soon discovers that it was a heroic knight who woke her from her slumber, and after a brief fight and “negotiation,” the knight decides to join her on an adventure to reclaim the dungeon! Together, they will unearth great treasures, reveal secrets and hidden rooms, and recruit monster girls to fight by their side.all while avoiding traps, fighting off dangerous enemies and bosses across multiple floors, and uncovering the devious plans of the new dungeon lord. In this story players will assume the role of an ancient fox spirit who awakens after several hundred years of deep sleep to find that possession of her lovingly made dungeon has been taken from her! As if that wasn’t enough cause for alarm, she has also been robbed of her power, leaving her weak and vulnerable.
